How to Provide Access to Google Tag Manager

Step-by-Step Guide for Digital Estate Clients

If you’re a Digital Estate client and we’ve requested access to your Google Tag Manager (GTM) account, this guide will show you exactly how to do it — clearly and securely.

Google Tag Manager helps us manage tracking tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, and other scripts without modifying your website’s code directly. To help monitor and improve your marketing, we’ll need access to the right GTM container.

Why Access Matters — And How to Avoid Losing It

Only users with Administrator access can manage GTM permissions. If the only admin account belongs to someone who leaves your team, your business could get locked out of its own data.

To stay protected:

  • Always have at least two Admin users on your GTM account
  • Use real, individual Google accounts — not shared logins
  • Keep admin control within your business (not just with external partners)

If your business uses Google Workspace, we recommend linking GTM to your Google Marketing Platform organization for more secure access control.

Adding Digital Estate to Your Google Tag Manager

Please grant access to: workspace@digitalestate.co.nz
We recommend Full Container Access and User Account Access at a minimum.

Step 1: Open Google Tag Manager

Head to https://tagmanager.google.com and log in with the Google account that owns your GTM account.

Step 2: Open the Admin Panel

  1. Click your website’s Container
  2. In the left-hand menu, click Admin

Step 3: Go to User Management

There are two types of access:

  • Account-level access: controls who can manage users and create new containers
  • Container-level access: controls who can view, edit, or publish tags inside a container

To Add a New User:

  1. In the Account column, click User Management
  2. Click the blue + button (top right) → Add users
  3. Enter: workspace@digitalestate.co.nz
  4. Under Account Permissions, choose:
    • User (can view account)
    • OR Administrator (can manage users and containers — preferred for us)
  5. Below, under Container Permissions, set:
    • Read
    • Edit
    • Approve
    • Publish
  6. Click Invite

Editing or Removing Access

To adjust permissions later:

  1. Go to Admin > User Management (under Account or Container)
  2. Click on the user’s name
  3. Modify their Account or Container permissions as needed
  4. Click Save

To remove a user, select them and click Remove

What Happens After Inviting?

We’ll receive an email invitation and a notification in our GTM account. Once accepted, we’ll be able to access your container securely.

What If No One Has Admin Access?

If the only Admin is removed or their account is deleted:

  • You cannot recover access via Google support
  • The account will become unusable
  • Containers with no Admin will be deleted after 30 days (unless exported)

To protect your account:

  • Assign at least two active Admins
  • Use real staff accounts, not temporary or agency-only access
  • Avoid shared login credentials
  • Link GTM to your Google Marketing Platform Organization if possible

Recovering a Lost GTM Container

If your container ends up in the trash:

  1. Export the container before it’s deleted
  2. Re-import it into a new GTM account where you have admin access
  3. Reassign users with the appropriate roles
